Writing by the Water

Letters work. Write your MLA and Premier Houston, and be sure to copy the Minister of Fisheries & Aquaculture and the Federal Minister of Fisheries and Oceans. For your convenience the emails for government officials are easy to copy from the blue boxes below. Full contact information is detailed at the bottom of this page.

1. Opening sentence: state why this is important to you personally

2. Highlight your concerns such as some, or all, of these key issues:

  • pollution (feces, antibiotics, sea lice etc - see dirty dozen)

  • conflict of use with residences, recreational use - boating, beaches, etc.

  • impact on lobster and lobster fishers

  • degradation of tourism offerings (our ocean playground and water based experiences)

  • risk of die offs and escapes that continue regardless of efforts to mitigate these

  • other aspects that concern you personally - see resources for more information

3. Encourage a positive way forward for Nova Scotia through land based aquaculture that is available from local, Nova Scotian company called Sustainable Blue. Scores of other companies are now popping up all around the world.

4. Closing comment: open net-pen fish farms have a detrimental impact with minimal economic benefit.
